Developed ultra-low resistance screw terminal type
electric double layer capacitors.

In response to the demand for screw terminal type electric double layer capacitors that is increasing in regenerated energy power storage applications, Nichicon Corporation has developed a super low resistance product with a size of Φ35 68 L mm, which is a first in the industry, and a direct current resistance (DCR)*1 of 3 mO (time constant*2 of 0.5 seconds), which is at the top level in the industry.
 
Overview and development background
As devices that are capable of the stable repeated charging and discharging of high currents, electric double layer capacitors are used in a variety of applications, including momentary voltage drop compensation equipment and power storage banks for distributed power supplies, as well as for regenerated energy power storage in distribution and transportation equipment.
As the desire to conserved energy becomes more widespread, demands to cut peak energy use and use regenerated power has increased. For electric double layer capacitors that are mounted inside of equipment, the demand for even further decreased resistance to handle rapid charging and discharging and high current charging and discharging has grown.
This product responds to these market needs and its super low resistance suppresses its own generation of heat in rapid charging and discharging and high current charging and discharging, thus contributing to improving the efficiency of energy use in equipment.
 
Features
Based on technologies that we have developed over the years, this product uses activated charcoal electrodes that reduce internal resistance and a low resistance electrolyte. In addition, by optimizing the internal element composition, in a screw terminal type with a size of Φ35 68 L mm, the DCR has been increased to 3 mO (time constant: 0.5 seconds), which is the highest level in the industry. By cutting the resistance in half, charging and discharging at twice the speed has become possible compared to previous products.
While the establishment of this technology enables high current charging and discharging to be handled, we also expect that it will allow capacitor units to be made smaller thanks to the smaller size of the product. Furthermore, screw terminal type electric double layer capacitors have high reliability and contribute to reducing equipment maintenance.

By utilizing this product's low resistance and high reliability in electric assist devices with electric drive augmentation, as well as in regenerated power storage applications, energy use efficiency can be improved, realizing further reduction in co2 emissions and contributing to the building of a low carbon society. In the future, we will further our efforts to increase capacity and decreased resistance, and we plan to expand this lineup.

This product will be shown at the EVEX Exhibition held July 14-16 (Wednesday-Friday) at the Pacifico Yokohama.

*1 Direct current resistance: This is the resistance of the capacitor to direct current.
The lower the internal resistance is, the more heat generation is suppressed during high current flow.
*2 Time constant: This is the product of capacitance and internal resistance (with seconds as the unit).
The smaller the time constant value is, the less time required for charging and discharging.
