Nichicon Adds 400V and 450V-ratings to the Compact, High Withstand Voltage "NU Series" Lineup of Screw Terminal-Type Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors Guaranteed to Operate at 105℃

Nichicon has added 400v and 450v ratings to the NU Series of capacitors used primarily in high voltage inverter circuits for power electronics, as well as various industrial machinery. NU Series capacitors are compact, high-withstand-voltage screw terminal-type aluminum electrolytic capacitors guaranteed to operate at temperature up to 105 ℃. The line-up will be on display at the CEATEC JAPAN 2013 exhibition, held at Makuhari Messe, October 1-5 (Tues-Sat).

Overview, Background of Development

Due to advances in industrial machinery efficiency, systems continue to require more compact, longer lasting, and more powerful components for inverter control circuits. Accordingly, we responded last September by developing the compact NU series of 500 V and 525V-rated screw terminal-type aluminum electrolytic capacitors which are more compact than the NT series, while yielding a longer lifespan. This year, after receiving a number of requests, we have added capacitors with rated voltages of 400V and 450V to the NU series lineup. By making these additions, we are seeking to offer a selection of capacitors with the optimal specifications for control circuits, belonging to inverter power sources, solar and wind power, and other renewable energy equipment.

Main Features

The NU series not only utilizes highly reliable electrode film with high withstand voltage oxide films, it also offers an electrolyte that features long term stability and enhanced film restoring capability at high voltages, as along with a low-density, high withstand voltage electrolytic paper. It was developed to provide enhanced heat dissipation, which offers a greater ability to withstand high voltages while maintaining a longer life compared to the current +105℃ -rated screw terminal-type NT series. The NU series is approximately 20 - 30% smaller than its predecessor, the NT series, which helps makes the equipment in which it is installed lighter and more compact.
Given the severe load fluctuations that occur in industrial machinery, we adopted Nichicon´s proprietary, highly-rated rapid charge-discharge technology to achieve higher reliability. This enables the NU series to be used in applications like AC servo motors that require repeated rapid charging and discharging over short periods of time.
Finally, we believe that withstanding higher voltages will enable the NU series to be used in an array of power sources, especially in regions with poor supply voltage where input voltage fluctuates.
