NICHICON CORPORATION has further expanded the capacitance of our "F98 Series", a face-down electrode-type tantalum electrolytic capacitor. These higher-capacitance products can accommodate the market trend toward smaller sized, higher intelligence, and greater versatility among mobile devices.

We will exhibit these products at "CEATEC JAPAN 2011," which is being held at Makuhari Messe from October 4 (Tuesday) to 8 (Saturday).

Overview / Background of Development

Unlike conventional mold-type tantalum capacitors, the "F98 Series" face-down electrode-type adopts our proprietary "FRAMELESS™" structure in which the electrodes are pulled out while bypassing the lead frame. It thus has a higher volumetric efficiency than mold-type tantalum capacitors of the same size and achieves size reduction with a higher capacitance by housing advanced-capacitor elements. It is used in a wide range of products including mobile devices such as smartphones, intelligent mobile phones, etc.

However, the trend toward smaller size, higher intelligence, and greater versatility of mobile devices has been advancing rapidly, and further expansion of capacitance is required for modern capacitors.

In order to accommodate the market needs, we expanded the range of our "F98 Series" to include even higher-capacity products and started volume production of the F98 A Case (3216 size) and F98 P Case (2012 size).


The "F98 Series" uses the "FRAMELESS™" structure optimized for expanding capacitance in several case size options. They are as follows: U Case (1.1 x 0.6 x 0.6 mm maximum), M Case (1.6 x 0.85 x 0.9 mm maximum), and S Case (2.0 x 1.25 x 0.9 mm maximum) sizes, and the newly added A Case (3.2 x 1.6 x 1.2 mm maximum) and P Case (2.0 x 1.25 x 1.2 mm maximum) sizes. This expansion opens up the possibility of replacing multiple MLCC capacitors and tantalum electrolytic capacitors having lead frame structures. It also contributes to the reduction of the mounting surface ratio and sizes of circuit boards of mobile devices and other equipment that require high-density packaging.

Our product lineup, which supports all standard backup circuit ratings of power supplies and audio output circuits, including 10V-150 F (A Case), 4V-220 F (P Case), etc., provides the highest mounting efficiency in the industry. Indeed, by replacing conventional "F93 Series" components with A and P Cases, it becomes possible to reduce the mounting surface occupied by capacitors by 73% and 51%, respectively.

Moreover, in order to respond to demands for reducing size even further while maintaining current capacitance levels, we have developed ultrafine tantalum powders that have a surface area per unit volume that is approximately twice that of existing materials in cooperation with a tantalum powder manufacturer. We also redeveloped and implemented element forming conditions and cathode forming conditions for these ultrafine tantalum powders. Although, in the past, 4V/220 F capacitance components could only fit the P Case (2012 size), our new production techniques allow us to fit such components as the M Case (1608 size) which is a size reduction of approximately 60%. Conversely, by using the same techniques for the P Case, it is possible to achieve a capacitance of 470 F, allowing for the greatest mounting efficiency in the industry. We are planning to ship samples starting next year.
