Development of a Small, Long-Life Electricity Storage Device Using Lithium Ion Batteries for Black-Outs

NICHICON CORPORATION has developed and will begin selling a small, long-life electricity storage device using lithium ion batteries, with a rated capacity of 50kVA to 100kVA, which are able to act as countermeasures against not only momentary voltage drops but also blackouts. The line-up will be on show at the CEATEC JAPAN 2012 exhibition to be held at Makuhari Messe from 2-6 October (Tues-Sat).


Overview, Background of Development

Until now, the company had developed and sold the electricity storage system for momentary voltage drops applying the Electric Double Layer Capacitors (EDLC) to act as a power backup system in counter for a momentary voltage drop, as well as the storage battery-based dispersed power source system using lithium ion rechargeable batteries.
In regard to the domestic power supply in Japan, there has been a growing demand for a power source backup system following the Great East Japan Earthquake. This product answers to these needs by using our technology and knowledge, and by providing a countermeasure against not only temporary voltage drops but also black-outs.


Main Features

  • Low Running Costs and Energy Savings
    During normal times, electricity is drawn from the commercial power supply, while during black-outs, it is cut off from the power grid to supply electricity from lithium ion batteries through adoption of a standby-type UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). In this way, little power is lost during steady operation (or standby) contributing to energy savings.
    (Energy saving effect: Cuts electricity consumption while on standby by 1/3 to 1/5 compared to an online-type UPS)
  • Compact Design, Small and Lightweight Enabling Installation
    By turning lithium ion batteries with high energy efficiency into an electricity storage device, it is possible to optimize the storage capacity to the backup requirements while being small and lightweight.
  • Long Life was Achieved by the Use of Lithium Ion Rechargeable Batteries
    Highly durable lithium ion batteries have been used, and implementing control optimized to the characteristics of lithium ion batteries can prolong their life, reducing the cost of maintenance (life expectancy of 15 years).
  • High Synchronization Performance with Uninterruptible Transfer
    Through digital control by power supply monitoring via high-speed sampling, it is possible to transfer automatically and uninterrupted (2m second or less) from a commercial power supply to that of a battery at the time of a black-out. Furthermore, the high synchronization performance of the interconnected system allows the power source to be transferred back instantaneously and stably to the commercial power supply upon restoration of power. This allows the system to be used as a supplementary source of power while switching between power sources that are asynchronous (out of phase) or of different frequencies. It can also be used as an uninterrupted, sustained backup power source system under hybrid control with an emergency generator.
  • Eligibility for Subsidies
    Backup power sources with lithium ion batteries are eligible for government subsidies, and installing the system under the categorical assistance program entitles the user to a subsidy equivalent to 1/3 of the cost including that of installation.
