Nichicon Corporation announces the addition of a 600-V rating to its LGN Series of snap-in-terminal type aluminum electrolytic capacitors, whose main applications include industrial machinery such a high-voltage inverter circuits for power electronics. These compact capacitors are guaranteed to operate at 105°C and will go into mass-production in April 2016.
The lineup will be on display at CEATEC JAPAN 2015 from October 7 to 10 (Wed.-Sat.) at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan.
Overview, Background of Development
As the industrial market makes advances in efficiencies and energy-saving functions, higher voltages are required. This creates a demand for higher voltage aluminum electrolytic capacitors that are used in the control circuits of power supplies. The need is particularly prevalent in the renewable energy-related fields such as solar and wind power generation. Nichicon has met these needs with its LGN Series of compact snap-in terminal type aluminum electrolytic capacitors, which can withstand rated voltages of up to 500V and are guaranteed to operate at 105°C. We have now added the industry’s highest voltage rating of 600V to the LGN product line. The focus for this expanded series will be in the power electronics market where energy-efficient operation is a priority.
Main Features
The LGN Series 600-V rated capacitors utilize highly reliable electrode films as well as high withstand voltage oxide films. The series also has long-term stability, and an electrolytic solution with enhanced film restoring capacity at high voltages, as well as high-withstand voltage electrolytic paper. These elements combine to make a Nichicon capacitor with the industry’s highest voltage. Particularly important in Nichicon’s development of the 105°C, 600V capacitor was the electrolytic solution; with 20-30% higher withstand voltages.
This new 600V product will now make it easier to smooth power requirements in areas where the input voltages fluctuate and may have poor power supply conditions.
It is also ideal for designing circuits of reduced size and cost, since the number of components can be reduced if multiple aluminum electrolytic capacitors are connected in series to meet the needs of the required system voltage. For example, a 1,200-V system would require a series of three 400-V capacitors, but only two of Nichicon’s new 600-V capacitors, resulting in an optimal, space-saving circuit design.
