 NICHICON CORPORATION has developed the new JUA series of leaded-type electric double-layer capacitors. This new series offers less than one-fourth the resistance of conventional products and double the life, at 2,000 hours. The product will be on display at CEATEC JAPAN 2017, taking place at Makuhari Messe from Tuesday to Friday, October 3 to 6.

Overview/Development Background

 Leaded-type electric double-layer capacitors are used in power source backup devices for smart meters and in auxiliary power supplies for printers and projectors. Other uses include drive recorders, which are gaining an increasing amount of attention as a way to prepare for the unexpected. They can also be found backup power supplies for automatic all-door lock override systems. These systems are able to unlock all of the vehicle’s doors when an impact is detected on the vehicle’s body. In recent years, sales of drive recorders have been growing substantially, and demand is expected to increase in line with advances in functionality. Regulatory trends are moving toward the adoption of impact-sensing door unlocking systems. These systems require instantaneous discharge in emergencies. Demand is increasing for power supply devices with lower levels of resistance that can be used for long periods of time. Electric double-layer capacitors are ideal for such applications.


 As we pursue lower resistance, Nichicon has revamped the element configuration on the JUA series. In addition to adopting electrolyte materials that allow the series to achieve long-term stability, we have optimized the overall design. This includes other many of the other components and materials used in the series. This allows us to reduce the resistance to less than one-fourth that of current products and achieve a life expectancy of 2,000 hours at 70°C, the highest in the industry. For applications that require instantaneous high power output, the use of low-resistance devices minimizes the voltage drop during discharge. This allows the discharge to continue for longer, which is an advantage, contributing to better equipment performance and increased compactness.
 The series can also be used in power source backup devices, and is ideal for mobile gaming devices and storage servers. Use as replacements for secondary batteries can help achieve maintenance-free operation and reduce environmental impact.

Contribution to Equipment

 The JUA series has one-fourth the resistance and twice the life of current products, and its characteristics degrade little over time in use. Because the series is low-resistance and offers high output, it can be used to replace electric double-layer capacitors as indicated below, making equipment more compact and helping to extend equipment operating time.
